The buzz phrase on every health blog these days is ‘superfoods’. But what are superfoods?

Superfoods contain high levels of important vitamins and minerals. Most of us lead a fast paced lifestyle and while taking supplements can assist you, adding a few of these superfoods can improve your energy levels, prolong life and reduce premature ageing.

Try adding blueberries to your next shopping list. They are full of antioxidants which can protect against cancer and reduce effects of conditions such as dementia. Use Blueberries in smoothies or muffins.

Add some black beans to your diet and reap the benefits of heart healthy fiber as well as energy boosting iron without all the saturated fat.

The fatty acids in one of my favourite superfoods – salmon, can reduce inflammation, improve circulation and reduce your risk of cancer.

Start your day off right by having a healthy oatmeal breakfast instead of processed cereal and lower your cholesterol and beat diabetes at the same time.

Cinnamon is famous for its ability to improve blood sugar control if you have diabetes. It helps prevent blood clots and also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Ground flaxseed reduces rates of certain hormone related cancers such as breast cancer. The inflammatory powers of flaxseed may also help keep conditions such as acne and asthma at bay.

Yogurt does more than just provide bone building calcium. The live bacteria commonly known as probiotics can assist with inflammatory bowel disease, ulcers, urinary tract infections and vaginal yeast infections.

Protecting your heart and your health doesn’t have to be a chore or taste like cardboard. Enjoy these superfoods guilt free. When you are dining outside of your home, you do not have to compromise on your health and wellness, as a few stores cater for this type of diet. I have a favourite health food store in Durban that I love visiting when I’m in the area and love picking up a few goodies to take home.
